The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government funded initiative designed to give people with disability more control over the supports and services they receive. It is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
The NDIA, or National Disability Insurance Agency, is the independent government body responsible for delivering the NDIS. Their role is to ensure eligible individuals receive the right level of support to meet their needs and goals.
When the NDIA reviews a support request, it must meet the legal criteria of being reasonable and necessary. This means the support must:
- Be directly related to the participant’s disability
- Offer good value for money
- Be likely to provide a positive outcome
- Not include everyday expenses unrelated to the disability
- Consider any informal support from family, carers, or the community
When creating your plan, you can ask the NDIS for help with putting it into action. You might be referred to a Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or if your situation is more complex, Support Coordination may be funded in your plan.
There are different levels of support coordination:
- Support Connection: Short term help to connect you with providers and set up service agreements
- Coordination of Supports or Psychosocial Recovery Coaching: More involved assistance where additional support is needed
- Specialist Support Coordination: For participants with complex or high level support needs that require specialist coordination.
Yes, you have the right to change providers if you're not satisfied with the support you're receiving. Be sure to check the notice period in your current service agreement. If you’ve already chosen a new provider, they can help you with the transition process.
The NDIS Code of Conduct, established by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, outlines the expected professional and ethical behaviour for all NDIS providers and workers. It ensures that participants receive safe, respectful, and quality services. You can find more information on the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission website.
